kanji (technically known as <strong>j\u014dy\u014dgai kanji<\/strong> [\u5e38\u7528\u5916\u6f22\u5b57] i.e. the kanji that are NOT within the 2,136<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J%C5%8Dy%C5%8D_kanji\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"> j\u014dy\u014d kanji<\/a>), and although I&#8217;m still nowhere near achieving this goal, I recently had an interesting idea: obtain a book written in Japanese in digital text format (of which there are plenty available for free over at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aozora_Bunko\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Aozora<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aozora.gr.jp\/cards\/000148\/card752.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">here&#8217;s the page on Aozora to download Botchan for free<\/a>), copy and paste the whole thing into a text editor and then run a bunch of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">GREP<\/a> commands to eliminate all of the j\u014dy\u014d kanji (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.joyokanjikai.com\/list-of-all-the-joyo-kanji\/\" title=\"\">here&#8217;s a complete list of them<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-link-color wp-elements-a3768160116b6770df0a39d2965d06ce wp-block-paragraph\">The book I used for this little experiment is the absolute-classic <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Botchan\" title=\"\"><em>Botchan<\/em> (\u574a\u3063\u3061\u3083\u3093)<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Natsume_S%C5%8Dseki\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Natsume S\u014dseki (\u590f\u76ee \u6f31\u77f3)<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-link-color wp-elements-cec27bcca8fd0043c95e3a171a6131a2\" style=\"font-size:30px\">According to my experiment, Botchan contains the following list of non-j\u014dy\u014d (\u5e38\u7528\u5916) kanji:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size
